Project Apollo’s goals went beyond landing Americans on the moon and returning them safely to Earth. They included:

The Apollo program, also known as Project Apollo, was the United States human spaceflight program carried out by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which succeeded in preparing and landing the first men on the Moon from 1968 to 1972.
The next step was the Apollo 9 mission, the first to carry a lunar module into orbit. Though the mission stayed in Earth orbit, Commander James McDivitt and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart separated the lunar module from the command module and flew independently for six hours, testing the lunar module’s systems.
Many are familiar with Apollo 11, the mission that landed humans on the Moon for the first time, but there were 14 missions total during the Apollo Program (1961-1972).
