Camulodunum (/ ˌ k æ m j ʊ l oʊ ˈ dj uː n ə m, ˌ k æ m ʊ l oʊ ˈ d uː n ə m /; Latin: CAMVLODVNVM), the Ancient Roman name for what is now Colchester in Essex, was an important castrum and city in Roman Britain, and the first capital of the province.

Overview. Camulodunum. Quick Reference. (mod. Colchester) Substantial earthworks surrounded an iron age oppidum of the Augustan period. This was the capital and mint of Cunobel (l)inus. Captured in Claudius' campaign of ad 43, a fortress of legion XX Valeria was constructed beside it, and in 49 a colony was founded on the site of the fortress.
17 de feb. de 2011 · Camulodunum was a hugely important site in pre-Roman times. It was most likely the royal stronghold of the Trinovantes, on whose behalf Julius Caesar invaded in 55 and 54 BC.
In A.D. 50 Claudius founded a Roman colonia adjacent to Cunobeline's city. An inscription preserved in Rome refers to it as: Colonia Claudia Victricensis which is in Britain at Camulodunum. The two places are thus one, and the identity of the site is beyond question. Camulos was a Celtic war god, and dunum means fortress.
