The story was first recorded by the Greek historian Strabo in the late first century BC or early first century AD and is considered the earliest known variant of the "Cinderella" story. The origins of the fairy-tale figure may be traced back to the 6th-century BC hetaera Rhodopis .
The Cinderella story is one of the most immediately recognizable of all fairy tales. It would be nearly impossible to compile a comprehensive history of the tale, with its precursors going back to the first century BCE, when Greeks living in Egypt told of a girl who attracted a king with her shapely sandal.
