Tutu fue el primer sudafricano negro en ser elegido y ordenado como arzobispo anglicano de Ciudad del Cabo (Sudáfrica) y luego primado de la entonces Iglesia de la Provincia de África Meridional (actualmente Iglesia Anglicana de África Meridional). Fue laureado con el Premio Nobel de la Paz en 1984.
Desmond Tutu (7 October 1931 – 26 December 2021) was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He was Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, in both cases being the first Black African to hold the position.

Tutu was saluted by the Nobel Committee for his clear views and his fearless stance, characteristics which had made him a unifying symbol for all African freedom fighters.
