The Duchy of Saxony ( Low German: Hartogdom Sassen, German: Herzogtum Sachsen) was originally the area settled by the Saxons in the late Early Middle Ages, when they were subdued by Charlemagne during the Saxon Wars from 772 and incorporated into the Carolingian Empire ( Francia) by 804.
Hace 2 días · By the early 10th century Saxony had emerged as a hereditary duchy under the Liudolfing dynasty, and in 919 Duke Henry of Saxony was elected German king. He founded the Saxon, or Ottonian, dynasty, which held the German crown until 1024. ( See Saxon dynasty .) Under the Ottonians, the Germans advanced eastward into Slavic territory.

Saxony has a long history as a duchy, an electorate of the Holy Roman Empire (the Electorate of Saxony ), and finally as a kingdom (the Kingdom of Saxony ). In 1918, after Germany's defeat in World War I, its monarchy was overthrown and a republican form of government was established under the current name.
