Electoral system. Under the amended 1976 Electoral Act, European elections must be based on proportional representation and use either the list system or the single transferable vote system. Member States may also authorise voting based on a preferential list system.

Work in plenary. Parliament meets in plenary session every month (except August) in Strasbourg, for a ’part-session’ lasting four days (from Monday to Thursday). Additional part-sessions are held in Brussels. The part-session is divided into daily sittings. Plenary business mainly focuses on debates and votes .
