Henry Knox was an American general in the American Revolution (1775–83) and the first secretary of war under the U.S. Constitution. Forced by family circumstances to leave school at age nine, Knox worked in a Boston bookstore and by age 21 had acquired his own store.

In December 1783 he became the commander in chief of the Army. After resigning from the Army on 20 June 1784, Knox was elected as Secretary at War by Congress in 1785, serving in the capacity until he became Secretary of War under the new Constitution in September 1789.
Henry Knox (July 25, 1750 – October 25, 1806), a Founding Father of the United States, was a Boston bookseller who became a senior general of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, serving as chief of artillery in most of Washington's campaigns.
General Knox served throughout the war for the Continental Army, including fighting during the Philadelphia Campaign, established an artillery school, presiding as member of the court martial that convicted John Andre, and directing artillery at the Siege of Yorktown.
