Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is a federally funded research and development center in the hills of Berkeley, California, United States. Established in 1931 by the University of California (UC), the laboratory is sponsored by the United States Department of Energy and administered by the UC system.
The Berkeley Lab – UC partnership is the most productive integration of a national laboratory with a major research university. It has led to 16 Nobel Prizes, 17 National Medals, and hundreds of scientific breakthroughs that have changed the world.

Campus stories. Lab confirms thirdhand smoke causes DNA damage. A study, led by researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and funded by UC's Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, has found for the first time that thirdhand smoke causes significant genetic damage in human cells.
