La Black Widow original fue creada por George Kapitan y Harry Sahle y debutó en Mystic Comics #4 (1940), publicado por la editorial Timely, que después se convertiría en Marvel Comics. Se puede considerar el primer personaje femenino disfrazado y con superpoderes que aparece en un cómic.
