On most college and university campuses in the United States and some in Canada there can be found a number of social, professional, or honorary organizations called fraternities (from frater, the Latin word for brother) and sororities (from soror, Latin for sister).
The word fraternal, like fraternities, is derived from the Latin word for brother (see fraternity and sorority). Fraternal societies are formed for social, economic, and benevolent purposes. There are three types: secret orders such as lodges; fraternal benefit societies, many of which are primarily insurance companies; and service clubs.
Fraternity is some kind of morality, ethics or idea. A synonym of fraternity is brotherhood. Fraternity is adopted for the national motto of France, "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity". Japan's prime minister Ichiro Hatoyama had an idea of a fraternity.
