  3. Klee was an artist who evolved a highly personal vocabulary, perhaps even a pictorial alphabet. It’s a detached, multilayered, and not always explicit universe, but at the very least we’re able to grasp the logic of its chronology. His first steps on the path towards a different kind of art began in 1914 on a trip to Tunisia.

  6. Paul Klee, a 20th century painter who defied classification, was born in Germany in 1879. His work showed its influence as early as 1917 and gave art critics a hard time. He settled in Munich in 1898 where he studied at Heinrich Knirr's drawing school and then later at the Academy.

That Heinz Berggruen had a flair for art could have been understood from his first purchase which he made during his honeymoon in Chicago when he bought a watercolor by Paul Klee from a Jewish refugee for just 100 dollars. Berggruen was also in America to escape the Nazi fury. He was just 22 years old and essentially penniless.
