Sirocco (hatched 23 March 1997) is a kākāpō, a large, flightless, nocturnal parrot, and one of the remaining living individuals numbering only 247 as of 2023. He achieved individual fame following an incident on the BBC television series Last Chance to See in which he attempted to mate with zoologist Mark Carwardine .
The kākāpō ( Māori: [kaːkaːpɔː]; [3] pl.: kākāpō; Strigops habroptila ), sometimes known as the owl parrot or moss chicken [4], is a species of large, nocturnal, ground-dwelling parrot of the superfamily Strigopoidea. It is endemic to New Zealand. [5] Kākāpō can be up to 64 cm (25 in) long.
