The present study proposes to reconcile the different spatial and temporal scales of regional species production and local constraint on species richness, bringing species production and extinction onto the same scale and establishing a link between local and regional processes.

A spatially extended evolutionary food web model is proposed that gives rise simultaneously to several biodiversity patterns in space and time, from species abundance distributions to the waxing and waning of geographic ranges and finds that trophic position in the network plays a crucial role when it comes to the time evolution of range sizes.
