Samuel Pepys FRS (/ p iː p s /; 23 February 1633 – 26 May 1703) was an English diarist and naval administrator. He served as administrator of the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament, but is most remembered today for the diary he kept for almost a decade.
The diary of Samuel Pepys. The diary by which Pepys is chiefly known was kept between his 27th and 36th years. Written in Thomas Shelton’s system of shorthand, or tachygraphy, with the names in longhand, it extends to 1,250,000 words, filling six quarto volumes in the Pepys Library.
The Diary of Samuel Pepys is a British historical television series which was originally broadcast on the BBC in 1958. Based on the diaries of the naval administrator Samuel Pepys, it portrays life at the court of Charles II during the 1660s.
The Diary is recognised as one of the most important resources for studying the period of the Restoration: crammed on each page with Pepys’s wide-ranging observations and commentaries on his professional and personal life, the Diary offers invaluable insights into political, social, naval and economic history.
