In December 2009, prior to the release of The Family Jewels, Marina wanted to do a re-release like Lady Gaga's "The Fame Monster", however, this was quickly scrapped in favour of a full studio album. Her initial idea for her second album was die Life, a "dark electronic pop record", with Marina joking it was something "Britney Spears would have made if she were goth." Her plans also including only working with one producer, potentially becoming "less commercial", as she didn't care if there were "no singles" off the album.

In 2010, whilst working on Die Life, Marina was initially very against co-writing with anyone, and wanted to work with one producer. However, after an "epiphany" in February 2011, Marina wrote Fear and Loathing alone, calling it "a turning point" in her life, after which she stopped being a "bitter person" and began to work with new people and try ...

    Singles

Inspired by the six-single promotional campaign for Teenage Dream (2010) by Katy Perry, Marina planned to release six singles from Electra Heart, however, only four tracks, and three official singles, were released before she finished promoting the album. Radioactive was released prior to the album being completed, as a standalone promotional single. Primadonna was the first official, and the lead, single. Power & Control was released as the second official single, and How to Be a Heartbreaker as the third and final single. Homewrecker was released on her website, as a reward for signing up to her mailing list. E.V.O.L was released as a reward for signing up to Marina's mailing list before February 13, 2013. Just Desserts was also a free download, released on May 1, 2013, however was never intended for Electra Heart.

    Scrapped Repackage

Planet Notion: There's no title track on Electra Heart but does such a song exist, in the same vein as The Family Jewels, which was left off the first album?

    Platinum Blonde Edition

On April 20, 2022 Nylon posted an interview with Diamandis, producer Rick Nowels, photographer and director Casper Balslev, amongst others, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Electra Heart. On the 23rd, Marina tweeted: On the 25th, fans started to notice Spotify ads for "Electra Heart (Platinum Blonde Edition)" On the 26th and 27th, fans discovered pre-orders for a pink double LP vinyl, which included 17 tracks. 15 of the deluxe tracks, but Buy the Stars and Radioactive were replaced by title track and E.V.O.L. Marina clarified that the vinyl was missing Buy the Stars and Radioactive as there was no space, but the digital edition would have all tracks. On the 27th, the 10th anniversary, Marina posted to Twitter: On the 29th, the vinyl and digital version were released.

    HEARTCORE

In December 2012, Marina revealed she was working on a fan film titled "HEARTCORE" (sometimes stylised as "HEARTC♡RE"), which would document her tour across the USA. A few months later, in March 2013, she shared a preview, however, the documentary never came to fruition. On June 23, 2015, Diamandis was asked what happened to the documentary, and whether something similar could be expected in the future, to which she responded:

    The Archetypes

In August 2011, Marina said each song would be granted a music video, set in 70s America, about a character called Electra Heart. An idea inspired by the parallels between Greek Mythology and Old Hollywood. She had intended initially to have 15 parts, with 5 of those in the same vein as The Archetypes and Su-Barbie-A, with the missing three presumably being the other three Archetypes. In October 2011, Marina said she intended to do an exhibition for a gallery, with films she was making for the album and photography collections. She said the first part of the campaign would focus on suburbia and housewives, however she had already Fear and Loathing a "Beauty Queen" track and Radioactive, an "Idle Teen" track.

    Outtakes

E.V.O.L, used as Part 8 of 'The Archetypes', and sent as a free download to those that were subscribed to Marina's mailing list before February 13, 2013, then only available on SoundCloud. It was included on the Platinum Blonde Edition of Electra Heart, to celebrate the 10th anniversary. Electra Heart, the title track, and used as Part 11, the final part, of 'The Archetypes'. Due to unknown reasons the song's released was delayed and was released in 2014, after the Electra Heart era ended. It was included on the Platinum Blonde Edition of Electra Heart, to celebrate the 10th anniversary. Eternity, never released, produced in Stargate's June 2011 sessions, it was possibly scrapped for Primadonna and Valley of the Dolls as they share similar lyrics and were produced in the latter part of 2011. Double Life, never released, produced by an unknown producer in 2011.

    Non-Album

Just Desserts, originally The Other Foot, a song by GhostPoet featuring Marina; Diamandis reworked the song with Charli XCX "just for fun". The track was only released on YouTube and SoundCloud, and was never part of the Electra Heart project. Bump in the Night, whilst part of Stargate's Electra Heart sessions, the theme of ghosts and the line "calm down Marina" instead of "Electra" means the song wasn't intended for the album. Bubblegum Bitch and Electra Heart were written before Bump in the Night, and include the phrase Electra Heart.

•The first promotional CDs sent out in the US had a different tracklist.
