Emperor es una banda noruega de black metal sinfónico fundada en 1991 por el vocalista y guitarrista Vegard Sverre "Ihsahn" Tveitan, el guitarrista Tomas "Samoth" Haugen y el bajista Håvard "Mortiis" Ellefsen en Notodden, Telemark.

Emperor is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991, regarded as highly influential by critics and emerging black metal bands. [2] [3] [4] The group split up in 2001, but reunited from 2005 to 2007 for a few festival dates and brief US tours, and again reunited in 2013 to 2014.
In 1990, an important shift occurred when Ihsahn joined Samoth’s band, Xerasia. Originally named Dark Device, Xerasia was a death metal ensemble that resonated with themes of death and apocalypse. Ihsahn, showcasing his versatility, contributed his skills on both the guitar and keyboards.

The Emergence and Controversy: Storming the Scene. Following the success of their eponymous EP in 1993, Emperor started gaining momentum. The band’s lineup was solidified with the addition of drummer Bård Eithun, known as Faust, and bassist Terje Vik Schei, also known as Tchort.
