The national flag of Ukraine ( Ukrainian: Державний прапор України, romanized : Derzhavnyi prapor Ukrainy) consists of equally sized horizontal bands of blue and yellow. The blue and yellow bicolor flag was first seen during the 1848 Spring of Nations in Lemberg (Lviv), the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria within the Austrian Empire.
They based their flag, consisting of equal horizontal stripes of yellow over blue, on the colours of the coat of arms used by the city of Lviv. The arms showed a golden lion on a blue shield, an emblem dating back many centuries.
The flag of Ukraine consists of two horizontal stripes - light blue one on the top and bright yellow one at the bottom. The blue stripe represents the sky and the yellow one stands for Ukrainian fertile land and fields.
