Mediante el uso de binoculareses posible avistar aves sin molestarlas. Se toma nota de lo observado en libretas de campo. Para llevar registros más duraderos, se puede hacer uso de la fotografía.
En el campo pueden colocarse redes de niebla para capturar aves. Estas son muy delgadas y no hacen daño a las aves. Solamente quedan atrapadas para que el ornitólogo la saque, las estudie en el mismo sitio con sumo cuidado y las libere de nuevo. Existen técnicas para sujetar a las aves para que no se vayan, sin lastimarlas y sin estresarlas mucho. ...
Las colecciones biológicas están compuestas por ejemplares preservados. En el caso de las aves pueden encontrarse huevos, aves disecadas o conservadas en alcohol. A partir de estas aves muestraspueden hacerse mediciones y determinar especies. Son comunes en museos y gracias a ellas es posible conocer organismos que antes desconocíamos.
Elementos particulares de las aves pueden estudiarse en un laboratorio, como es el caso de muestras sanguíneas. También pueden llevarse a cabo pruebas más complejas y en ambientes controladospara estudiar su comportamiento.
