Ketteler ist der Gründer der Katholischen Arbeitnehmerbewegung und wurde aufgrund seines Engagements für die Arbeiterschaft der Arbeiterbischof genannt. Er war ein Großonkel von Clemens August Kardinal Graf von Galen.
