  5. Biography. Raeburn was born at Stockbridge, near Edinburgh, on 4 March 1756, the younger of the two sons of Robert Raeburn and Ann Elder. He was educated at George Heriot's Hospital, Edinburgh, and at the age of sixteen was apprenticed to the goldsmith James Gilliband.
