In 1835, when control of the borough no longer had political interest, the marquess sold his estate to Sir William Coles Medlycott (d. 1882) (fn. 157) and it descended with the Ven estate.

Between 1860 and 1867 this company opened pits at Chase Terrace (in Chasetown parish, Offlow hundred), Rawnsley, and Heath Hayes which were still in use in 1954.
