The huge bell inside, called “Big Ben,” got its name a bit later. But, “Big Ben” mostly means the bell, not the whole tower. Big Ben is more than just a clock. Its chimes are famous.

The Palace of Westminster, and therefore the tower, is on the Parliament square next to Westminster Abbey. On the opposite side of the palace there is the Thames embankment.
