In or about 681, with the consent of Ethelred, king of Mercia, Osric, under-king of the Hwiccas, founded a monastery at Gloucester in honour of St. Peter and St. Paul. It is possible that a monastery for men was attached to it as to many other monasteries for women which were founded before the eighth century.

The basic plan of Gloucester owes much to its Roman origins, but its street pattern was laid down in the Anglo-Saxon period, with possibly a planned development in the early 10th century. (fn. 1) Infilling and suburban expansion continued throughout the 11th and 12th centuries.
