The polluted nature of the area was noted by Sir William Petty in 1676, at a time when unpleasant smells were considered a vector of disease.

It was the creation of local physician and horticulturalist Dr Wilfrid Fox in the 1930s and has been in the complete care of the National Trust since 1988. We're are now making further investments so that it remains a horticultural gem.

(fn. 32) The church in New Kent Road consists of a chancel, nave and a tower with a small spire. It is placed nearly north and south, and the tower is at the south-east and forms at its lowest stage an entrance porch.

The advowson, which has been generally annexed to the manor, is now vested in the Reverend Giles Hatch, the present incumbent. In 1291 it was taxed at 20 marks; in the King's books it is valued at 16 l. 18 s. 4 d. per annum.
