Prince Carl (Karl) of Solms-Braunfels (27 July 1812 – 13 November 1875), was a German prince and military officer in both the Austrian army and in the cavalry of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. As Commissioner General of the Adelsverein , he spearheaded the establishment of colonies of German immigrants in Texas.
Frederick William (1696–1761) was created a Prince of the Holy Roman Empire in 1742, with his younger offspring also bearing the title prince and princess, styled Serene Highness. On March 14, 1845, Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Germany, purchased 1,265 acres for $1,112. Thus, the “City of a Prince” was born. Seven days later, on Good Friday, Prince Carl led the first settlers into New Braunfels, named after his ancestral German home. This city’s story takes flight on the dreams of German emigrants.
