Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. Joseph Patrick "Joe" Kennedy, Sr. (September 6, 1888 – November 18, 1969) was a prominent United States businessman and political figure, and the father of President John F. Kennedy and Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy. He was a leading member of the Democratic Party and of the Irish Catholic community.
Tragically, he lost his life flying a dangerous volunteer mission in 1944. Joseph Kennedy Sr. had been grooming both of his sons for political office. However, the weightiest of expectations often rested with Joe Jr. With Joe Jr.'s death, John likely felt a sense of obligation to carry on his family's dream.
