He transformed the simple, austere plantation of his parents into an elegant estate, stories of which even now evoke the lavish and graceful lifestyle of the elite of pre-Revolutionary Virginia.

  3. Philip Ludwell III died in 1767 in London and was buried in the Ludwell family vault of the church of St. Mary-le-Bow, in the Stratford area of London where the River Lea (Lee) meets the Thames. His daughter Hannah Philippa Ludwell Lee was also interred in this plot in 1784, just prior to her intended return to the fledgling United States.

Upon his return, he represented nearby Jamestown in the Virginia House of Burgesses. In 1750, Philip’s brother-in-law Thomas Lee of Stratford Hall passed away.

Philip Ludwell Lee, Sr. and Elizabeth Steptoe.1 She married General Henry Lee III, son of General Henry Lee II and Lucy Grymes, from 8 April 1782 to 13 April 1782 at Stratford Hall.1 She died in 1790.1.
