Etimologia Falkland. Il nome ufficiale in lingua inglese Falkland deriva dal capitano inglese John Strong che nel 1690 chiamò lo stretto tra due isole "Falkland Sound", in onore dell'ufficiale di bordo Anthony Cary, quinto visconte di Falkland, che a sua volta prende il nome dal paese di Falkland (Fáclann) in Scozia; il nome è poi passato ad indicare le isole principali oltre che lo stretto.
