Mr. De Mille was born at De Mille Corners, a backwoods crossroads in Ashfield, Mass., on Aug. 12, 1881, while his parents were touring New England with a stock company. His father, Henry Churchill De Mille, was of French-Dutch ancestry; his mother, the former Matilda Beatrice Samuel, of English stock.

Henry Churchill De Mille (1850–1893) De Mille, Henry Churchill. An American playwright; born in North Carolina, about 1850; died at Pompton, NJ, Feb. 10, 1893. His first successful play was the ‘Main Line,’ in which he collaborated with Charles Barnard.
He was the second of three children of Henry Churchill de Mille (September 4, 1853 – February 10, 1893) and his wife, Matilda Beatrice deMille (née Samuel; January 30, 1853 – October 8, 1923), known as Beatrice. His brother, William C. DeMille, was born on July 25, 1878.
