Gwenllian was the only child of the marriage. T here were no sons, therefore, to inherit the title of Prince of Wales, but as the daughter of Prince Llywelyn, Gwenllian was the heiress of the Princes of Gwynedd and the royal family of Aberffraw. She was the Princess of Wales and as a result represented considerable danger to the king of England.

While it is believed that her ghost still haunts the town of Cydweli, a spring is said to have welled up on the very spot she was beheaded, and for centuries after her death, the battle cry of the Welsh was Ddail Achos Gwenllian! or “Revenge for Gwenllian.”
Gwenllian was born in 1282 and was the daughter of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, also known as Llywelyn the Last, the first and last King of Wales. She was an only child, making her the heiress of the royal family of Aberfrraw. Her mother, Eleanor de Montfort, tragically died while giving birth to her.

Gwenllian was the daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan (1055–1137), Prince of Gwynedd and Angharad ferch Owain, and a member of the princely Aberffraw family of Gwynedd.
