House & Family History: Ashdown is one of only two extant English works (the other is Hammerwood, Sussex) of Benjamin Latrobe, later architect of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. Latrobe designed Ashdown just before he emigrated to America (1795). The house is ashlar-faced, three-bays wide, with a middle Ionic portico of four columns.
Ashdown House is tenanted and when open, access is limited to hall, staircase (100 steps ) and roof. Access to the house is on by pre-booked guided tour only on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2, 3 and 4pm, for up to 16 people at a time..
