Johann Caspar Goethe war ein wohlhabender Jurist und Kaiserlicher Rat in Frankfurt am Main. Sein Sohn Johann Wolfgang gilt als einer der bedeutendsten deutschsprachigen Dichter und herausragende Persönlichkeit der Weltliteratur.

Johann Caspar Goethe was born in 1710; his parents ran the Frankfurt inn Zum Weidenhof together with a flourishing wine trade. Their prosperity enabled him to pursue an academic career and study law, the first in the family to do so. In 1742 Johann Caspar Goethe acquired the title of imperial councillor which did not carry any obligations with it.

Goethe's father, Johann Caspar Goethe (1710–1782), lived with his family in a large house (today the Goethe House) in Frankfurt, then a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. Though he had studied law in Leipzig and had been appointed Imperial Councillor, Johann Caspar Goethe was not involved in the city's official affairs. [8]
