We are grateful to the White House Historical Association, which recently honored the memory of Caroline Scott Harrison as our First President General in a social media post. Here is the information the group, to which we presented a DAR Historic Preservation Medal at the 130 th Continental Congress, posted on January 8:
Married - October 20, 1853 to Benjamin Harrison. Children - Russell Benjamin (1854 – 1936), Mary Scott (1858 – 1930) Education - Oxford Female Institute in Oxford, Ohio. Firsts - 1st First Lady to have a Christmas tree in the White House. 1st First Lady to deliver a speech she had written herself.
Caroline was horrified at the filth and clutter, and cleaned out all the rooms including the kitchen, which she also modernized.
