George William Frederick Charles, 2nd duke of Cambridge (born March 26, 1819, Hannover, Hanover [Germany]—died March 17, 1904, London, Eng.) was a conservative field marshal and commander in chief of the British army for 39 years. He was the only son of Adolphus Frederick, the youngest son of King George III.
The 1st Battalion moved to Vilvorde, then on to Leuven, where they had their first engagement with German troops four days later. The following day, during very heavy fighting, Lord Cambridge was killed, the first officer of the Coldstream Guards to fall. He was a popular soldier and his loss was felt.
