Gaspard II. de Coligny, Sohn einer französischen Adelsfamilie, wurde 1519 in Châtillon-sur-Loing geboren. Sein Vater starb, als Coligny fünf Jahre alt war, und ließ seine Mutter mit ihm und seinen zwei Brüdern zurück. Seine Mutter interessierte sich für religiöse Reform und gab dies durch ihre Lehrer an ihre Söhne weiter.
