Caspar David Friedrich (5 September 1774 – 7 May 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation. He is best known for his mid-period allegorical landscapes which typically feature contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic or megalithic ruins.

Biographie Jeunesse et formation Caspar David Friedrich, autoportrait. L'enfance de Caspar David Friedrich est marquée par la mort de ses proches qui, entre 1781 et 1791, décèdent les uns après les autres : à sept ans, en 1781, il perd sa mère et sa sœur Elisabeth ; en 1787, son frère Johann Christoffer se noie dans la mer Baltique et, en 1791, meurt sa sœur Maria.
