The San Francisco Art Institute at 800 Chestnut St. (1961-2022). In 1871 the San Francisco Art Association (SFAA) was founded by local artists and supporters to promote art in the city. San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) was a private college of contemporary art in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1871, SFAI was one of the oldest art schools in the United States and the oldest west of the Mississippi River. Approximately 220 undergraduates and 112 graduate students were enrolled in 2021.

The school became known as the California School of Fine Arts in 1916, moved to the Chestnut Street location in 1926, and was renamed the San Francisco Art Institute in 1961.
