Anne Spencer was born Anne Bethel Scales Bannister on February 6, 1882, on a plantation in Henry County, Virginia, to former slaves, Joel Cephus Bannister and Sarah Louise Scales, the daughter of a slaveholder. Spencer’s parents separated in the late 1880s. Her mother supported the family by working as an itinerant cook.

While fewer than thirty of her poems were published in her lifetime, she was an important figure of the Black literary movement of the 1920s—the Harlem Renaissance—and only the second African American poet to be included in the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry (1973).
Anne Spencer is remembered as a poet of the Harlem Renaissance—a flowering of African American culture and arts that began after World War I and extended into the 1930s. She wrote in a romantic vein about love, the search for meaning in life, women’s lives and struggles, and the experience of African Americans.

Spencer was the first African-American woman poet published in the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry (1973). She used traditional forms like sonnets, epigrams, and elegies, and most of her poems are short, with few extending beyond 20 lines. Her poetry draws on universal themes such as religion and mythology as well as her garden and nature.
