Herbert Marshall nació el día 23 de mayo de 1890, en Londres, Inglaterra. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial perdió la pierna sirviendo a su país. Herbert estudió contabilidad, pero su gran vocación era la interpretación y en el año 1929 le llegó su gran oportunidad al intervenir en su primera película, “La carta” , en la primera versión de esta película.
