Young was educated at Sherborne College and University College London and trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Taking his first professional London stage bow in 1908, Roland moved to the United States a few years later, made his New York debut (in "Hindle Wakes") in 1912, and became a fixture on Broadway.
