El Museo Solomon R. Guggenheim se estableció en 1939 a partir de una colección privada de obras de Pintura Abstracta del mismo Solomon R. Guggenheim. A lo largo de los años ha sumado otras importantes colecciones privadas de arte moderno y del siglo XX, llegando en la actualidad a alojar más de 1.500 piezas.
Miembro de la empresa Guggenheim Brothers, durante la década de 1920 inició una colección de arte y en el año 1937 creó la Fundación Solomon R. Guggenheim para promocionar el arte moderno. En 1939 la fundación abrió el Museo de Arte No Objetivo, que más adelante se denominó Museo Solomon R. Guggenheim , en Nueva York .
