Cedric Gibbons fait des études d'architecture à la Art Students League of New York. Il travaille ensuite avec son père, qui était lui aussi architecte. Il commence sa carrière en 1915 comme assistant de Hugo Ballin aux studios Edison. En 1918, il est engagé chez Goldwyn comme directeur artistique.
