Indeed, when commencing work on the project, screenwriter Ernest Lehman told the director he wanted to make: “A Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures. One loaded with wit, sophistication, glamor, action, and lots of changes of locale.”.
North by Northwest became the sixth highest-grossing film on 1959 and would eventually generate a healthy domestic box office return of $13,275,000. In 1995, it became the fourth Hitchcock film to be selected for preservation by the United States National Film Preservation Board and remains one of the most popular Hitchcock films with cinema audiences.
