Robert Ritter von Greim trat am 24. Juli 1911 als Fahnenjunker in das königlich-bayrische Eisenbahn-Bataillon in München ein. Nach dem Besuch der Kriegsschule in München wurde er Batterie-Offizier im 8. bayerischen Feldartillerie-Regiment, mit dem er 1914 in den Krieg zog. Im März 1915 meldete er sich freiwillig zur Fliegertruppe.
