Edmund Sheffield, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Normanby (1716–1735) Following the death of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Normanby,the greater part of the Sheffield family estates, including the principal residence at Normanby Park, passed to his half-brother, Sir Charles Herbert later Sheffield, 1st Bt., the illegitimate son of his father by his mistress Frances Lambert.
John Sheffield, 1st duke of Buckingham and Normanby was an English statesman, patron of the poet John Dryden, and author of poetic essays in heroic couplets. The son of Edmund, 2nd earl of Mulgrave, he succeeded to the title on his father’s death in 1658.
