In Henry Hew Dalrymple's evidence to the 1789-90 Committee on the Slave Trade, he said he had purchased his estate on Grenada from Mr Townsend, Treasurer of the island, who had been trustee of his (Henry Hew Dalrymple's) father. Dalrymple said his estate of 250 acres had been in cocoa but was then uncultivated, 'and no slaves belong to it.'.
Hew Hamilton Dalrymple was born on 27 September 1857, the third son of John Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair and was educated at Harrow School. In 1877, he joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers as a second lieutenant, subsequently rising to the rank of Major. [3] In 1908, he was appointed to the rank of Brigadier in the Royal Company of Archers.
