Wilhelm Pieck was one of the leading communist officials in the Weimar Republic. In February 1933 he emigrated to Prague, then to Paris and later to Moscow. Since Ernst Thälmann was imprisoned in Germany and the National Socialists murdered Thälmann’s immediate successor, John Schehr, in February 1934, Pieck assumed the chairmanship of the German Communist Party (KPD) in exile.
Wilhelm Pieck. Wilhelm Pieck (1876-1960) fue un político comunista alemán que se alineó con la Unión Soviética durante y después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Pieck se convirtió en una figura importante en la formación de la República Democrática Alemana (RDA o Alemania del Este) y, en 1949, su primer presidente.
El único titular fue Wilhelm Pieck del Partido Socialista Unificado de Alemania (SED, por sus siglas en alemán), elegido el 11 de octubre de 1949 y reelegido en 1953 y 1957. Poco después de la muerte de Pieck el 7 de septiembre de 1960, se enmendó la Constitución.
