  1. Isaac Bernays was born in Mainz on September 29, 1792. He studied at the University of Würzburg before becoming chief rabbi at the Jewish congregation in Hamburg in 1821. Bernays was the first Orthodox rabbi in Germany who introduced the German sermon into the service.

  4. Isaac Bernays was rabbi in Hamburg from 1821. He struggled against the Reform movement and influenced his disciple, Samson Raphael Hirsch. His son, Jacob, taught Greek at Bonn University (1848-53), but, as a Jew, could not be promoted. He then left and helped found the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary in 1853.
