Murad, informado por su madre de la muerte de su padre, tardó diez días en llegar a la capital otomana. Llegado Murad a Constantinopla, Nurbanu Sultan entregó el cuerpo de Selim II y Murad III fue aclamado como nuevo sultán. Nurbanu Sultan se convirtió en Valide sultan (Sultana madre), y se convirtió en la mujer más poderosa de ese período.
