It is dedicated to her nieces, Grand Duchess Olga of Russia and Grand Duchess Vera of Russia. When her husband died on 6 October 1891, Olga became queen dowager. She died one year later, on 30 October 1892, in Friedrichshafen, aged 70. She was buried in the crypt of the Altes Schloss in Stuttgart. Honours

Not only was she the aunt by marriage of Tsar Alexander II (and, indeed, the sister-in-law of Tsar Alexander I and Tsar Nicholas I), she was also a central figure in the complex series of political and bureaucratic manœuvres that led up to the emancipation of the serfs in 1861.
Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, later Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, Grand Duchess Vladimir "Miechen" of Russia (Russian: Мари́я Па́вловна; 14 May [O.S. 2 May] 1854 – 6 September 1920), also known as Maria Pavlovna the Elder, was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin by his first wife, Princess Augusta Reuss of Köstritz.
Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna Romanova of Russia was born on 16 February 1786 in Saint Petersburg as the fifth child and third daughter of Tsesarevich Paul Petrovich of Russia and his second wife, Tsesarevna Maria Feodorovna (1754–1801), born Duchess Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg (1759–1828). She was named after her mother.
